Rather than focusing on architectural detail, Elaine uses layers of loose, gestural marks to suggest the surrounding cafés, awnings and buildings. The rain-blurred background gives the painting an almost dreamlike quality, while the figures provide warmth and a human presence within the scene.
The expansive reflective pavement is central to the composition. Broken marks of light and colour echo the people above, creating depth and movement, while the brighter passage through the centre gives the impression of light persisting beyond the rain.
It is this contrast between the darker edges of the street and the light that remains within it that gives the painting its quiet sense of optimism.
