Studies of light, memory & atmosphere
Original Paintings by Elaine Purcell
Available work
This work explores the atmosphere of a city street on a wet day, when reflections, passing figures and changing light become as important as the buildings themselves.
Rather than focusing on architectural detail, Elaine uses layers of loose, gestural marks to suggest the surrounding cafés, awnings and buildings. The rain-blurred background gives the painting an almost dreamlike quality, while the figures provide warmth and a human presence within the scene.
The expansive reflective pavement is central to the composition. Broken marks of light and colour echo the people above, creating depth and movement, while the brighter passage through the centre gives the impression of light persisting beyond the rain.
It is this contrast between the darker edges of the street and the light that remains within it that gives the painting its quiet sense of optimism.

Two figures search the shallows, absorbed in the simple pleasure of discovering what the water might reveal in The Treasure Hunters, an original acrylic painting by Elaine Purcell.
Set against a softly painted expanse of warm peach and muted sand tones, the figures emerge through loose, expressive marks. Cool turquoise and blue-green reflections break across the foreground, bringing light and movement to the water and creating a striking contrast with the warmth of the surrounding landscape.
There is something wonderfully timeless about the scene. Elaine captures not a grand event, but one of those small, completely absorbing moments when the rest of the world seems to disappear. The result is a painting filled with curiosity, companionship and the quiet nostalgia of time spent beside the water.

Reflections of Her is an original figurative portrait painting by UK artist Elaine Purcell, capturing quiet strength, femininity and presence through expressive brushwork and layered texture.
The painting explores the quiet complexity of identity and presence. Rather than focusing on realism alone, the painting invites the viewer to connect emotionally with the subject through atmosphere, gesture and light.
The pale hat and muted palette bring a calm elegance to the composition, while the textured surface adds depth and movement throughout the piece. Contemporary yet timeless, this painting is designed to create a sense of stillness and sophistication within a space.
A striking original artwork for collectors of expressive figurative painting and modern portraiture.

Hi I’m Elaine Purcell..
My work explores the quiet tension between memory and identity—what we carry forward, and what we struggle to release. Through layered surfaces, fragmented imagery, and partially obscured figures, I examine how past experiences continue to shape the present, even when they no longer serve us.
The figures in my paintings often exist in states of introspection, neither fully defined nor entirely dissolved. Textures, numbers, and visual remnants act as traces of lived experience-echoes of personal and collective histories that cling, fade, and resurface.
I am particularly interested in the balance between holding on and letting go. By building up and erasing layers, I create a visual language that reflects this process-where clarity and disruption coexist. The work invites the viewer to consider their own internal landscapes, and the stories they continue to carry.
